Media Experimentation Assignment #4: Gouache Painting

For the introductory Gouache assignment, I decided to paint a hummingbird. I really like how it turned out!

For those who may not know what it is, Gouache is a type of paint identical to watercolor in all ways but one: it has white chalk in it. This allows the paint to be more opaque and easier to layer than watercolor. However, just like watercolor, it never fully sets and can always be re-activated by water even when completely dry. This is a double edge sword, because while it lets you go back and change mistakes in dry paint, you can also accidently ruin or completely erase sections of the painting you like. It's also easy to overwork the Gouache, muddying the color or starting to dissolve the paper/illustration board your working on.

Illustration assignment "Coqui frog creation" based on the puerto rican legend of the coqui frog. The goddess fell in love with a human named Coqui and after he died she created the frogs to sing his name every night (Coqui frogs are named after the sound they make) so this is an illustration of her creating the frogs from her tears.

Coquis don't have a tadpole stage as they're a tree-dwelling species, so they emerge as froglets (miniatures of the adult). The less developed white frog represents their fetal stage inside the egg

Media Experimentation Assignment #5: Waterproof Ink and Gouache

Featuring New Game Blixer! (I think this is the first time I've posted him here?) This was a really fun assignment! We used waterproof ink to do linework and block in the general values, then added color to the painting with Gouache. We also needed to use line weight to add depth to the painting. I ended up re-drawing a frame from an unfinished animation for the linework, it looks much better than the original frame I made over a year ago.
